I heard just this morning from a news that Mantayupan Falls in Barili run dry. I was shocked and felt so upset because I haven't got there yet. It was one of my plans if I could have time and money to spend together with my family to go there since I have not yet seen a waterfalls. How sad to know that the water run dry.
As I read the Sun Star News (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/local-news/2012/07/12/sinkhole-appears-river-falls-run-dry-231503), there's a sinkhole in the river bed that caused the water to run dry. According on the news, from a testimony of Mr. Ariel Pucayan, who lives near the area, it was last Tuesday afternoon that the water started to subside and the sinkhole began to grow wider and deeper. It was also confirmed from the Barangay officials that both the riverbed and falls dried up when the sinkhole appeared.
Due to this, for sure many lives will be affected on the incident. I was also wondering why within this year many sinkhole appeared in different area. Where do these sinkholes come from or how do these sinkholes were formed?
According to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinkhole), a sinkhole, also known as a sink, snake hole, swallow
hole, swallet, doline, or cenote,
is a natural depression or hole in the Earth's surface caused by karst processes — the chemical
dissolution of carbonate rocks

for example in sandstone. Sinkholes may vary in size from 1 to
600 meters (3.3 to 2,000 ft) both in diameter and depth, and vary in
form from soil-lined bowls to bedrock-edged chasms. Sinkholes may be
formed gradually or suddenly, and are found worldwide. The different
terms for sinkholes are often used interchangeably.
But these sinkholes still remains a doubt in my mind, is this due to the earthquake that happened last February? As I connect the event and news about the appearing sinkholes in different areas, I realized those sinkholes were seen after the 6.9 magnitude earthquake that hit Cebu last February 6, 2012.
